Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike has expressed satisfaction
with the quality of work at the Rumuokoro Market and Park.
The governor who spoke on Monday during his inspection of the market
which has been completed , noted that it will help to decongest
traffic along that route.
Governor Wike said his visit to the market is to ensure that
contractor executed the key project in line with approved
specifications.
The market was started by Governor Wike to check street trading along
that route. The Rumuokoro Market and Park has 608 open stalls, 91 lock up shops
and Modern Park for transporters.
It will be recalled that Governor Wike in February, 2017 explained to
the leaders of Rumuokoro why he started the construction of the market
and park. The governor had earlier explained to the street traders why they will
be relocated by his administration .
Speaking when he granted audience to the Nyeweli Rumuokoro, Eze
Allwell Ohwonda and Leaders of Rumuokoro Clan at the Government
House, Port Harcourt in February 2017, Governor Wike stated that
the Rumuokoro Market and Bus Station is a step towards stopping
street trading in that axis.
He said after the completion of the two facilities, nobody would be
allowed to trade on the major road, while illegal parking of
commercial vehicles on the road would be discouraged.
He noted that criminals operating along the road will also be
dislodged and the Rumuokoro clan made more secure for business and
residential purposes.
He said: “Once we complete the Rumuokoro Market and Bus Station, those
trading on the road will be relocated to the market. We shall
therefore no longer allow people to trade on the streets.
“The community will be accomodated in the market as well. We will
also a community health centre for Rumuokoro clan. “
The governor noted that his administration will continue to
promote community development across the state, pointing out
project execution is one of the ways to appreciate the people for
their loyalty and support.
The governor also inspected the rehabilitated Government Girls
Secondary School, Rumuokwuta.
